LAS VEGAS BREAST ASYMMETRY

Women in general present with asymmetric breasts. Having slight asymmetry is actually considered normal. I see patients every week in our Beverly Hills office for breast asymmetry surgery. When I visit Las Vegas monthly, I do see patients who show significant asymmetrical breasts as well. Asymmetry preoperatively is correctable. Manners in which asymmetry can be corrected include:

1. Breast implant asymmetry surgery through the use of slightly different size implants. If the disproportion is slight, the same size implant can be used and over-filling one implant more than the other can lead to excellent results. However, if irregularity is significant, but the nipple positions are even, then different size volume implants all together should be used in order to regain symmetry. As a result, asymmetry can be corrected with different volume implants.

2. Asymmetry associated with skin laxity such as in patients who have grade 3 ptosis on one breast and smaller contralateral breast with good nipple position well above the inframammary fold can be corrected with asymmetrical breast augmentation with different size implants and a breast lift using either a vertical or formal mastopexy, as necessary, depending upon the amount of skin laxity.

3. Breast asymmetry with grade 3 ptosis or the nipple position below the inframammary fold by greater than 3 cm bilaterally can be corrected by simply removing skin and performing asymmetrical breast surgery by breast lifts on both breasts and changing volume implants as necessary.

4. A patient with hypoplastic breasts with a good nipple position on one side and breast hypertrophy, overly-enlarged breast with grade 3 ptosis on the other, can be corrected, although the most difficult scenario, with an implant placed on one breast (the smaller breast) and a breast reduction performed on the contralateral breast in order to regain uniformity. I do and have performed these surgeries. Symmetry may be difficult to obtain in the upper pole fullness, especially when an implant is only used on one side.

In summary, asymmetrical breasts is extremely common. Most women show some form of asymmetry either by volume, by nipple position or by skin laxity. It is correctable by changing and creating a discrepancy in the volume by implant size and/or by breast lifting or reduction as necessary.
