An interesting article from the New York Times dated March 30, 2011 discusses “A Decade of Boosting Breast Size.” According to this article, there has been a 40% increase in the past decade of breast implants with still over 300,000 breast augmentation operations performed in 2010. I find this article fascinating because there has been a downtrend in facial plastic surgery; however, breast augmentation and breast lift surgery has either remained stabilized or is increasing annually.
As a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Beverly Hills, I operate on patients that I see worldwide for breast enhancement, breast lift and breast revision surgery every single week. Interesting statistics in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons indicate that breast enlargements with implants and lifts is still a significant priority for women who are undergoing cosmetic surgery while rhinoplasty, facelifts and eyelid surgery have declined significantly over the last 24 months.
"...there has been a 40% increase in the past decade of breast implants with still over 300,000 breast augmentation operations performed in 2010"
Statistics include 296,000 breast implants placed in 2010. That is a 2% increase over 2009 and an overall 39% jump since 2000. The majority of the operations are performed on the western hemisphere of the United States. Breast lifts have also increased 9% since 2009 with over 90,000 lifts performed in 2010. There were 13.1 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2010, which has increased 5% since 2009.
Operations that have declined over the last decade include:
Of most interest to me with respect to this New York Times article is that breast augmentation now has stabilized as the most popular invasive cosmetic surgery procedure performed on women in the United States of America. My practice continues to see great number of women for breast enhancement, breast revision and breast lifting which corresponds correctly with the statistics seen by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the recent New York Times article.
